China: "Opposing Dalai Lama, highest priority"(a)

"Thru: Phayul ..- By Tenzin Dharpo. DHARAMSHALA, Sept 30: Following the Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s successful European trip where he addressed the seat of EU in Strasbourg, China has raised objection and has vowed to make it their “highest priority” to counter his influence, reiterating their stand of labeling the Nobel laureate as a “separatist” threatening the unity of China. Party secretary of TAR, Wu Yingjie, said in a speech published on Friday in the official Tibet Daily mentioned, "First, we must deepen the struggle against the Dalai Lama clique, make it the highest priority in carrying out our ethnic affairs, and the long-term mission of strengthening ethnic unity." He also vowed to, "thoroughly expose the reactionary nature of the fourteenth Dalai Lama, crack down on separatist and subversive activities, and strive to eliminate at their roots harmful elements that damage ethnic unity." China’s vilification of the Tibetan leader is not new, with the Tibetan leader’s efforts to resolve the Sino-Tibet issue for a few decades construed to be of “separatist” nature and often dealt with “over cautious” sensibilities as described by the Dalai Lama himself. Dr. Han Lianchao, Chinese dissident and a former staff in the Chinese Foreign Ministry who is now a visiting Fellow at Hudson Institute, recently disparaged China’s dealing with the 81 year old Tibetan leader saying, “Contrary to what the Chinese Communist Party says in their propaganda, the Dalai Lama is no separatist” and that his proposed solution to of Middle way Approach, “is opposed to separatism.” The Chinese scholar expressed that his understanding of the Tibetan leader and the Tibetan struggle evolved in time. “It’s only after having more opportunities to observe and interact with the Dalai Lama at close range and having more frequent interactions with Tibetans that my brainwashed thinking has gradually begun to change,” Lianchao wrote. He further criticized Zhu Weiqun, the former executive deputy head of the United Front Work Department who has spearheaded campaigns against the Dalai Lama as being the “true separatist culprit”. He wrote, “Zhu Weiqun led Tibet interest Group has continually devised ways to demonize the Dalai Lama in order to protect their own Tibetan “iron rice bowl.” They’ve vilified him as a separatist and a traitor and even insulted him as a “wolf in sheep’s clothing. They’ve put up all sorts of obstacles for him, deceived the central authorities, undermined negotiations, and prohibited the Dalai Lama from returning home.” The Chinese dissident and advocate for democracy in China felt that China’s indifferent response to the Dalai Lama’s peaceful and much weighed resolve will only push to “radicalize moderate Tibetans and forced them on the path of Tibetan independence.” https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=917860811649650&substory_index=0&id=358337004268703
