"Vesak Day
Celebrating the Buddha's birth, awakening, and parinirvana
Tuesday, May 29, 2018

On Vesak Day, we celebrate the Buddha's birth, awakening, and parinirvana, and we rejoice in our own potential to become fully awakened too.

We not only remember the kindness of our root teacher, Shakyamuni Buddha, we also honor all the teachers who have brought the Dharma to our hearts and minds.

All merit accumulated on this special day is multiplied 100 million times.

Suggested Vesak Day Practices

Take the 8 Mahayana Precepts.
Read or recite and reflect on Buddhist sutras, like the Heart Sutra or the Sutra of the Three Heaps (35 Buddhas).
Watch Ven. Chodron's beautiful telling of the Buddha's life story and how it relates to your own life.
Watch Ven. Chodron's teaching from Buddhism: One Teacher, Many Traditions, on how the Buddha's life is explained in Pali and Sanskrit traditions.
Make special offerings to the Three Jewels on your altar and do the extensive offering practice.

Watch Ven. Chodron's inspiring Vesak Day talk encouraging us to recall and realize our human potential.
Make special offerings to your teachers, Dharma center, or monasteries."

"Happy Birthday, Buddha!

On Tuesday, millions of Buddhists will celebrate Vesak, or “Buddha Day.” As assistant editor Lilly Greenblatt writes, Vesak “marks the birth, enlightenment, and death of the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, born 2,600 years ago. These three significant events in the Buddha’s life are all said to have happened on the same day many years apart.”

Those who celebrate don’t all celebrate on the same day. In China, for instance, Vesak is often celebrated in June. But, for everyone, the occasion offers a chance to appreciate the Buddha and all that he did. In that spirit, this Weekend Reader explores who the Buddha was, what he taught, and how his words still inspire us today.

"We would like to share something of how Tibetans observe Saka Dawa, the most sacred of Buddhist holidays, when we celebrate the birth, enlightenment and death (parinirvana) of the Buddha Shakyamuni.

The merit of any good deeds that you perform during this month are considered to be multiplied many times over — by as much as one hundred million times — so it is an excellent time to dedicate ourselves to all kinds of spiritually positive actions."
