"RECEIVING THE TEACHING To receive the Dharma, we need to be a "good vessel." To be so, it is necessary to avoid three defects. If we attend a teaching by merely hearing it rather than listening to it, we resemble an upside down container. We can pour as much water as we want over it; nothing will penetrate it. Therefore, we should be very attentive to the teachings given to us. However, it is not sufficient to listen correctly, it is also necessary to remember what is being said; lacking that, we are like a container full of holes. It receives water, but releases it immediately. Finally, it is also necessary that the container be pure, in other words that our conflicting emotions do not mix with the received teaching. If, for example, desire, anger, or torpor disturbs our mind at the moment we receive the Dharma, it is said that it is like poison mixed with good food. At the moment, the poisoned food may appear delicious to us, but sooner or later, it will harm us. The power of conflicting emotions, in the same manner, may overcome the beneficial characteristics of the Dharma. During a teaching, the right attitude is to be attentive, to retain what is explained and receive it with confidence and joy, reminding ourselves that it presents ways to reach Awakening and benefit beings. The context of Vajrayana requires a special attitude. Vajrayana implies transformation of the impure into the pure. A teaching of this vehicle should be received thinking that we are not in an ordinary place, but in a pure land such as the Field of Bliss, taking into account that the lama who gives it is not an ordinary being, but a yidam, a Buddha, or a bodhisattva. We should look at the assembled people as a meeting of gods and goddesses. We should also think that the word of the master is union of sound and emptiness, endowed with the 60 qualities of the word of a Buddha." ― Kalu Rinpoche https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=3183298338421045&id=100002227318458
